Writings - Doing Windows
For decades, the Traverse City Record-Eagle kept a series of columns online that I conceived and wrote for first-time PC users way back in 1997—when modems were our on-ramp to the Web, the biggest name on the Internet was America Online, and Google was still just a glimmer in Larry Page’s eye.
In all my years of writing and reporting, none of my work has generated the response that this series did—dozens of phone calls, emails and letters from people of all skill levels thanking me for helping them figure out their strange beige boxes and asking me for additional tips. One 85-year-old grandmother sent me her first email ever, and thanked me for helping her do it. Several contacts resulted in ongoing email exchanges as I electronically talked first-time users through particularly tricky tasks.
