Writings - Cuba Crossing
This series of stories grew out of a week-long boat trip to Cuba that I took with a couple of Northville businessmen and several other crew members and passengers, including fellow reporter Jack Kresnak from the Detroit Free Press (he's the one getting seasick on the trip—sorry, Jack).
The story "Cuban excursion turns into relief effort" was faxed to the Northville Record from Florida shortly before our boat, the 42-foot Newfie Bullet, left port in Key West. "Expedition brings relief to impoverished island" was written while aboard the Newfie Bullet as it sat in Marina Hemingway just west of Havana, and dictated to a fellow Northville Record reporter over a static-filled marine radio connection. I wrote the feature story "Cruise to Cuba combines physical, political dangers" on my return, from the journal I kept on the trip.
